Dear friends in Kyiv, we are sorry we are unable to be with you for the International LGBT Forum Festival “Kyiv Pride 2014”. By means of this letter the Intergroup on LGBT Rights in the European Parliament would like to express its genuine support for this important event.
The past year has been a tumultuous one, not only for Ukraine in general, but particularly for LGBT people.
Whereas the Maidan protests demanded human rights for all, the consequent developments saw a deterioration of the situation for LGBT people, most notably in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. At the same time, the government continued to show meagre support for protecting LGBT people from discrimination.
We must remind Ukraine that European values and universal human rights include the rights of LGBT people, and that these are not negotiable. We are very keen to strengthen ties with Ukraine, yet the very goal of this deeper cooperation should be to further strengthen human rights and freedom. In the European Parliament we will continue to fight for this.
Fear and hatred are no way to deal with diversity and differences in modern society - on the contrary we should all be proud to have the richness of diverse communities in our cities, villages and societies on the whole.
We wish you all the best for Kyiv Pride 2014.
Yours in solidarity,
Sophie in ‘t Veld
