From 05 to 27 June in Ukraine the first national LGBT photo contest "The Constitution of Ukraine: the civil rights are my rights" is held. The LGBT contest was timed to the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine. The ceremony of awarding the winners of the photo contest will be held at the Cultural Center named after J.Kennedy at the US Embassy in Kyiv on July 12, 2013.
The Government and President of the United States of America support the movement for equal rights of citizens, tolerance in the society, and the right of people to self-determination. The rights of LGBT people have been one of the key points of the presidential program of Barack Obama.
As noted by US Secretary of State, John Kerry, all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserve "equality before the law."
The support of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine of the LGBT cultural event is important for LGBT rights movement in Ukraine. These actions demonstrate the immutability of upholding human rights policy, democratic values and give hope to the LGBT community in Ukraine to change the human rights situation in the future.
As part of the contest, the staff of the National LGBT portal and LGBT activists in Ukraine pay attention to the constitutional rights of citizens including, enshrined in the Constitution, the right to peaceful assembly, the right to privacy, and the right to liberty.
The purpose of the contest is to draw attention of the LGBT representatives to the necessity to remember and enjoy their rights, as well as to defend them using legitimate methods, and to remind their opponents that the Constitution guarantees and protects human rights and the rights of LGBT people in Ukraine.
The National LGBT portal is very grateful to the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine for wholehearted support of the LGBT photo contest "The Constitution of Ukraine: the civil rights are my rights." We are strongly confident that only by joining efforts, we can ensure a democratic future in Ukraine.
